Limelights назывались так потому, что lime (окись кальция, или негашёная известь) был одним из главных компонентов процесса горения, который давал сильный, яркий свет, используемый в театрах для освещения с середины XIX в. С помощью a limelight (свет рампы) яркий луч света направлялся на главного героя на сцене, чтобы таким образом обратить на него особое внимание зрителей.
